Het is al decennia duidelijk dat eenzaamheid slecht voor onze gezondheid is. In een review (een onderzoek naar eerdere onderzoeken), gepubliceerd in 1988, beschreven House en zijn collega’s al de sterke relatie tussen sociale connecties en gezondheid. De onderzoekers schreven dat eenzame mensen in vergelijking met mensen met sterke sociale connecties, een hoger risico op ziektes en overlijden hadden. En dit risico was volgens de auteurs vergelijkbaar met het risico voor mensen met hoge bloeddruk, mensen die roken en mensen die niet bewegen.
